In recent years, bath bombs seem to have exploded (pun intended), with thousands of Instagram-worthy colours, scents and fizzes (did you know that there is actually a science to controlling the fizz?). While the bath bomb behemoth Lush dominates the UK with their vibrant colours and fragrances that reach deep into your soul, most bath bombs have similar properties, meaning you don’t have to sell a kidney to have a nice soak. Today we’re talking about what to look for, what to avoid, and why you should make bath bombs part of a regular bath-time routine.
Let’s just focus on the bare bones of it – using a bath bomb means having a bath (radical, I know). Really though, who doesn’t love running themselves a nice, hot, bubbly bath? Adding a beautifully-smelling bath bomb gives you the perfect excuse to get into hot water!

- Warm water can help you to feel relaxed. Your first 9 months of existence were surrounded by warm water (might be gross to think about but go with me on this one). We are psychologically very comforted by this similar feeling to being back in the womb, and can help us feel relaxed, quiet and comfortable. It’s also a great place to ground yourself after a stressful day by just soaking in the warm water with no other distractions (if you can bear to leave your phone outside the bathroom).
- Hot baths can help you sleep better. When you sleep, your body temperature naturally drops as the sleep hormone melatonin is produced. Taking a steamy bath will raise your core body temperature so when you exit, your temperature will decrease more rapidly, helping to prepare your body for a better night’s sleep.
- Warming tight muscles relieves pain. Do you feel tense when you’ve been out in the cold? The opposite is also true! Being surrounded by warmth encourages your muscles to relax, including tense, sore muscles. This relaxation is great for relieving muscle aches and pains; and is popular with sufferers of chronic pain.
- Steamy water is a great decongestant. In the darkest recesses of the flu, did you ever put your head over a bowl of steaming water because your mum told you it was a good way to clear the airways? This works in the same way, only a little bit more relaxing and a little less like your face is melting.

Aside from the pretty colours and #aesthetic fizzing, bath bombs actually have their own health benefits. Most bath bombs are made up of a few core ingredients, which along with creating the perfect bath time atmosphere, are also great for your body.
- Epsom Salts. Commonly found in bath products, you may also know Epsom Salt as bath salts. This naturally-occurring mineral has many reported health benefits, which is attributed to the presence of Magnesium – a mineral that most of us do not get enough of! Epsom Salts are reported to promote psychological wellbeing by reducing stress and inducing sleep; as well as other reported benefits of relieving pain and contributing to exercise recovery.
- Bicarbonate of Soda. For those amongst us that don’t watch The Great British Bake Off, bicarbonate of soda is also known as baking soda. Being a slightly alkaline substance, baking soda is great for neutralising any pH imbalances in the skin, not to mention being able to clear your skin from acne and even out skin tone! So many wins!
- Citric acid. It’s not as bad as it sounds! The fizzing in a bath bomb is the result of a chemical reaction between the citric acid and the baking soda – but that’s not all the citric acid does. Read the label on popular anti-ageing ointments and you’ll likely see citric acid on there; this is because it loosens dead skin, allowing fresher, younger skin cells to replace it.
- Moisturiser. In our moisturising range of bath bombs, you’ll find Shea butter, but other moisturisers are also used in bath bombs to leave your skin silky-smooth and hydrated after a soak.
- Essential oils. While not always present, most bath bombs do contain essential oils or fragrances, being perfect for some aromatherapy while you bathe. - Bath bombs with glitter. We all want to feel like a sparkly unicorn every once in a while. When you eventually wash off the glitter, the unicorn dust that made your bath so magical ends up being washed up somewhere, where it cannot be broken down and so just sits there, being decidedly less magical. If looking like fairy threw up on you when you get out of the bath is a deal-breaker, look out for bath bombs that only use bio-degradable glitter. Your planet thanks you.
- Sensitivities. If you have any allergies, its a good idea to check the ingredients. Most bath bombs are designed to be gentle on your skin, but sometimes an ingredient just won’t agree with you. Its important to know what does and doesn’t work for you!
- Know when to take a break. Like with most things in life, moderation is key. While it’s true that bath bombs are good for your body and mind, overuse may lead to some issues… down there. Listen to your body and take a break from bath bombs if needed to avoid any urinary tract infections.
I think we can unanimously agree that bath bombs are freaking awesome. Anything that makes you want to strip down to full-frontal and jump into hot water has to be a win, right?
